Slow Stitching 2 – Rice Bag– With Alison and Shuji

Slow Stitching 2 – Rice Bag– With Alison and Shuji

In this workshop we will learn the Japanese art of boro – piecing, patching and mending to save and use small precious pieces of fabric. Using a collection of 30-70 year old Japanese fabrics and hand-dyed indigo thread, we will make a komebukoro – a ‘rice bag’. This is a traditional bag for giving a gift or making an offering.

You can use these stitching skills for contemporary ‘visible mending’ and to create pieces featuring favourite and treasured fabrics.

In boromono (literally worn out/rag things), scraps and pieces of old textiles are given new life. For many years, these textiles were unappreciated as reminders of hardship. They are however one of the great textile traditions of Japan and the world. This saving of scrap, reusing, layering, patching and reinforcing through stitching is at the heart of sashiko, kogin, chikuchiku and much contemporary Japanese quilting. Modern textile artists like Akiko Ike and Junko Maeda have taken this tradition and extended it into new art forms, but holding true to using old cloth and simple stitching, finding beauty in aligning unexpected colours, patterns and textures.

Original boro textiles will be on show during the workshop to give you the chance to examine and learn from these unintentional artworks.

Rice bag workshop kit contains (included in the cost of the workshop):
